Are you struggling with a sore throat?

Runny nose?

Do you catch cold frequently from your co-workers? Children?

In the past few weeks as the weather has turned colder, there has definitely been an increase in the number of people who have runny noses, sore throats, a cough and achy and fatigued joints.

The good news, is that there is lots you can do to boost your immune system. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting tips that can help boost your immunity naturally and ensure that you stay well over the winter.

A poor immune system can be due to a number of things:

Poor Gut Health

Poor gut health doesn’t necessarily mean that you have gut issues. Poor gut health can present as mental health issues, inflammation in joints, poor immunity, sleep issues. If you eat things that inflame your gut like gluten, dairy, sugar (most common) or processed foods, your exposed to chemicals, pollutants, you use chemical soaps, shampoos etc this can all have an effect on gut health.

Gut Dysbiosis

An imbalance of bad/good bacteria in the gut (antibiotics can upset this balance) Research has shown that 1 course of antiobiotics can cause the bacteria to be upset for years.

Inadequate Nutrients

Inadequate nutrients to support immune health.

My Top 3 foods for improving Immunity:

Chicken or Beef Bone Broths.

Bone broths are the best thing that you can do for your immunity. They also help to heal the gut. Healthy gut = healthy immunity. The nutrients are in the bones. The best way to make them is to use grass fed-organic bones from chickens or beef. Brown them in the oven using apple cider vinegar and then stick them in a slow cooker with vegetables, water and spices to taste and then simmer it on low for 12-24 hours. Drink a cup a day.

Naturopaths secret tip: There are plenty of companies who now may dehydrated bone broth which means that you only need to add water. So no prep, no smelly house and no waiting 24hrs plus for your bone broth.

2 of my favourites are:

Broth of Life Organic Beef Broth. https://www.brothoflife.com.au/collections/broth-stock/products/beef-bone-broth

Garlic

Garlic contains a compound called allicin that is activated when garlic is crushed. Allicin has been shown to reduce the severity of cold and flu symptoms and that symptoms went away faster. Most of the studies showed that raw or aged garlic is the most effective in boosting the immune system, therefore these therapeutic benefits may be lostt through cooking. Most people don’t feel like chomping on a raw clove of garlic so a good idea would be to either to take a supplement form or to include garlic in your salad dressing or added to your meals after cooking.

Gold Kiwi Fruit

The gold kiwi fruit contains one of the highest amounts of Vitamin C, even higher than an orange. Vitamin C helps increase white blood cells that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders.

Increase intake of these 3 foods to help boost your immune system this winter.
