Everyday Superfoods

On A Budget? These Foods Are Just As Good As Exotic Superfoods

It seems like every week there’s a new exotic superfood that claims to cure all ills. But what if you don’t want to shell out $50 for a few spoonfuls of powder? Eating healthy can be pricey if you include every superfood on the shelf. If you’re looking for options that are budget-friendly, it’s time to look to your everyday superfoods.

Green tea

If you love the boost from coffee, you might want to get to know green tea. Green tea has caffeine, but it also contains amino acids and antioxidants with significant health benefits.

One compound, L-theanine, works with caffeine to improve brain function and balance brain chemicals. Another, EGCG, can reduce your stress hormone levels.

The best part is that a cup of green tea at home or in the office tearoom is far more affordable than your daily takeaway coffee! We blend our own range of Organic Green Tea, grown right here in Australia. www.inspiredhealthbydee.com/tea-shop

Not a fan of bitter green tea? Try brewing it in hot water, rather than boiling. Add about 25% cold water before adding water from the kettle, and brew for 2-3 minutes. This technique reduces the bitter flavour.

Eggs

These are like nature’s multi-vitamin, and are more affordable. Eggs are easy to prepare, portable, and are packed full of nutrients such as protein, zinc and fat-soluble vitamins. In fact, eggs are one of the top dietary sources of choline, a nutrient that is essential for brain function. Whenever possible, go for cage-free/free-range eggs. Happy hens mean more nutritious and delicious eggs!

Beans

Meat and poultry can be pricey sources of protein. Plant-based pseudograins like quinoa contain protein and some minerals, but can also go for a hefty price. But the good news is that there is an affordable protein source that is also full of minerals – beans and legumes.

Many legumes contain minerals such as magnesium, which can help with muscle soreness, sleep and stress. Beans and legumes are also good sources of protein and fibre, which you fuller for longer and give you steady energy throughout the day.

Dark chocolate

Don’t get too excited – this doesn’t mean eating a block of Cadbury Milk every day. But 1-2 squares of good quality dark chocolate per day can be part of a healthy, balanced diet.

The antioxidants found in cocoa have been found to boost blood flow to the brain. Cocoa is also a good source of magnesium and iron.

My favourite dark chocolate is Alter Eco https://www.alterecofoods.com/products/dark-blackout

Small oily fish

Salmon is a well-known superfood, but it can be incredibly pricey, especially if you buy it fresh. If you’re looking for the benefits of salmon without the price-tag, go for smaller types of oily fish such as sardines and anchovies instead.

These fish are not only a great source of protein, but also contain good amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory and can benefit those with painful conditions like endometriosis.
